SXSW 2007 – A Recap

Joshua Lane / / No Comments

Like everyone else seems to have done, I intended to write a SXSW recap post this past weekend. However, a fiendish cold had me firmly in its grasp and kept me pinned under a blanket for two whole days. Good times. Anyways, on with the tales of excitement and wonder!

Let’s start with tales of excitement… the panels! First off, let it be known that I only attended about half of the panels I had originally planned to. I blame this equally on too much drinking the nights before and the fact that I’m lazy. Still, the highlights for me were as follows…

  • Kathy Sierra Opening Remarks (Sat, March 10th)
  • Perspectives on Designing for Global Audiences (Sunday, March 11th)
  • The Future of the Online Magazine (Monday, March 12th)
  • Worldchanging 2.0 (Tuesday, March 13th)

I had never seen/heard Kathy Sierra speak, so it was a real treat to experience that. The Global Audience panel brought up some great talking points about how different cultures/countries have different expectations when it comes to the web. My favorite panel, by far was The Future of the Online Magazine. I think Mark, Brian and Vince (MethodArts) might agree with me on that one as we couldn’t stop laughing the entire time. The panelists were fantastically engaging and the verbal sparring between CollegeHumor and The Onion was priceless. The very last panel I went to, Worlchanging, was a great way to end the conference for me… very informative and eye-opening. I’ll definitely be purchasing that book soon.

Now for the tales of wonder… the parties! Every night at SXSW, there were probably 5 or 6 parties you could choose from. And, on average, I attended about 2-3 each night… hence the previously mentioned “too much drinking”. Anyway, here are my highlights from the parties…

  • Break Bread With Brad SXSW Eve 2007 (Friday, March 9th)
  • pMachine (Expression Engine) Meet-Up (Saturday, March 10th)
  • 2nd Annual Avalonstar Bowling Extravaganza (Sunday, March 11th)
  • South by Northwest (Monday, March 12th)
  • Media Temple Closing Party (Tuesday, March 13th)

“Break Bread With Brad” was a really nice intro event for SXSW. Lots of people, but not too loud or crowded. The following night favorite was a more low-key affair put on by the pMachine folks. A small, but awesome group (Happy Cog, Airbag, Method Arts, nClud and a few others) were all in attendance. And you can’t go wrong with free food! More free food flowed at the Avalonstar Bowling tournament… although, I was too late to get any (grrr). The event was rather chaotic; but a nice break from the bar/club events of other nights. However, back to the bars we went for the SXNW party. And good thing we did, as it was by far my favorite of all. I had a fantastic time meeting and talking to a bunch of folks I hadn’t seen yet at the conference or other parties. The highlight of my night was definitely spending some quality time with a certain someone. And that brings us to the final event of SXSW 2007, the Media Temple Closing Party. Just like last year, Apple Martinis flowed (along with a kamikaze) and I had a fantastic time. It was a great way to end my 2nd year at SXSW. Can’t wait until 2008!
