Choosing A Color Scheme

Inspiration is All Around You

One of my favorite parts of the design process is choosing a color scheme. It can also be one of the most difficult… especially if you’re starting from scratch. Still, if you’re stuck in a rut and trying to find some inspiration for that web 2.0 ajaxipplication you’re creating, I’m here to help.

One of the methods I like to use is to look at clothing… yours, your co-workers’, etc. Take a look at what you’re wearing right now and think about the color combinations you picked out. Do they work well together? Would they work on a website? Now look at those around you… how about those color combinations? All of a sudden you have several viable options to try out.

Here are a few other possibilities (feel free to add more in the comments):

  • Photos
  • Magazine & Catalogue Spreads
  • Food (Cookbooks, Packaging, etc)
  • Posters (Movies, Concerts, etc)

I also recentely discovered your blog.
I love your writing style, usually I’m not interested in reading blogs.
I agree with your points on colour scheme–I use the same technique as well as others.
When usually when I have a design I have some sort of name or subject so I think of that word in my head quickly and what feel I get from it.
I relate words to colours I believe its a case called Synthesia?(not sure of spelling)
