A New Blog Format Emerges

Joshua Lane / / 4 Comments

I think it’s official… the hottest new blog format right now is the “3 rows layout”. After browsing though 15 pages of CSSReboot entries, I noticed quite a few have adopted this new style. The basic setup is as follows…

  • Row #1 – Logo / Navigation
  • Row #2 – Most recent blog post (w/ possible sidebar stuff)
  • Row #3 – Big Footer (w/ previous posts, flickr photos, etc, etc)

Some standouts from the recent “boot” (as the kids are calling it) include Jeff Croft, Jared Christensen and Kyle Jones.

I have to admit though, I’m a bit torn on this new style. On one hand, I like that the most recent post is getting displayed so prominently on the home page (…as opposed to being 1 of 5 or 6 recent articles). On the other hand, placing so much content in the footer of the page means a lot more scrolling. It’s like putting the milk in the back of the grocery store, forcing people to pass by other stuff… WAIT A MINUTE! *shakes fist ferociously*

I think you summed this up quite nicely before.

I haven’t any problem with this format (I’m not going to call it a grid system, it’s not necessarily in all the different versions). My only beef is that some of them seem to be doing it because “it’s the cool thing to do” not because any particular design sensibility was behind the choice.
