When I was in college, I weighed about 185/190lbs. I wasn’t super skinny or anything, but was a pretty normal size for someone 6′0″ tall. Soon after college (2000/2001), I started my first “professional” job… in other words, I sat on my butt all day. During my year or so there, I gained about 10/15lbs. After the .com bust (hooray!), I moved on to another job where I sat on my butt some more… 3 years more to be exact! By the time 2005 rolled around, I weighed about 270lbs. UGH!!

Fast-forward 3 years (to earlier this morning) and I officially weigh 198lbs. It’s the first time I’ve been under 200lbs in probably 6 years. Yes, I shed a tear or two. How did I lose 75+lbs? I walked a lot. Selling my car and living in a city helped force me to walk more, but that’s pretty much all I did… I walked a lot.

Getting Fit?

Stupid body! Why won’t it do what I tell it to??? It’s like a petulant child that says “okay” when it’s told to be nice to its sibling. Except, 5 minutes later he/she is throwing gum in the other’s hair. I’m not sure how that analogy works with weight loss, but every time I tell my body to lose weight it doesn’t wanna listen. Stupid body!

ANYWAYS… I haven’t written about my ongoing saga with weight loss for a while, so I felt it was time for an update …or lack of one. Whatever. The last time we talked about this subject, it was about a year ago and my weight was 226.6lbs. As of this morning, my weight was 210.2lbs. I’ve lost 16.4lbs in a year… not the greatest of progress, but decent I guess.

Unfortunately, I’ve kinda hit a wall with my weight loss and in order to REALLY get into shape, I need to start doing more targeted exercises. For example, because I walk a lot, my legs are pretty much fine. But my arms are kinda wimpy and I have a bit of weight in the mid-section still to lose. So, rather than try to do this on my own and end up hurting myself, I’ve decided to join a gym and get a personal trainer. I’m not trying to get crazy ripped or anything, but I just want to get into shape and I want to make sure I do it right. Plus, it’s really hard to motivate myself to exercise. But, if I have someone else helping to motivate me (and knowing that I’m paying $xxx for it)… well, that works a little better.

Participating in The Diet

It’s been a while since my last update. Sorry about that. I attribute that lack of sharing to a combination of “wanting to post other things” and “no weight was actually lost”. Luckily, I find myself with nothing else to talk about, and an actual bit of weight loss to report. Hooray!

Week 1 Weight: 227.6lbs

Week 2 Weight: 228.8lbs

Week 5 Weight: 226.6lbs

Goal Weight: 200lbs

“Good Enough” Weight: under 210lbs

Deadline: October 21st (10-year highschool reunion)

At the last weigh-in, I had actually gained 1lb, but this time I’ve lost that extra pound and another on top of that. And it only took me three weeks! …ugh, this isn’t going as well as I had hoped. At this rate, I’ll only lost about 10lbs before my reunion. Time to start increasing the amount of exercise I do.

The Adventure Continues

As previously mentioned, I’m currently trying to lose a few pounds as part of “the diet“. When I last did this on the NewInPhilly blog, I would provide an update once every month or so. That worked out pretty well, but this time around updates are coming weekly. So, here’s where things stand…

Starting Weight: 227.6lbs

Current Weight: 228.8lbs (AHHHH!)

Goal Weight: 200lbs

“Good Enough” Weight: under 210lbs

Deadline: October

Hooray, I’ve gained 1.2lbs! Ugh. Eating pizza on Thursday… and Friday might have had something to do with it. I know, not the best idea in the world.

This next week I’m hoping to get in some more exercise… maybe do some more walking and try to bring my lunch to work a few times as opposed to eating out.

Year 2

Some of you might remember my adventures in losing weight from the NewInPhilly blog. All told, I ended up losing ~40lbs that year. In anticipation of my 10-year high school reunion this October, I’ve decided to start up again. This time around I’m joining up with Colin Devroe and crew for “the diet”. Technically, I won’t actually be “dieting” per se, but I am going to watch what I eat and exercise a lot more.

Current Weight: 227.6lbs

Goal Weight: 200lbs

“Good Enough” Weight: under 210lbs

Deadline: October

I really would like to get down to 200. Given that my deadline is October, I only have 4 full months to pull it off… which averages out to ~6lbs per month. That’s pretty do-able, but I have to stay consistent with my exercise and not cheat.

Wish me luck! And wish everyone else luck too!

Things started really well with a good amount coming off, but then slowed down a bit. Now, instead of doing a month by month count of how much weight I’ve lost, I’d rather just give you a total amount thus far.

Total Weight Loss (since April 2005): 30lbs

Yeah baby, 30 god damn pounds! My goal is to lose another five before the year ends, but we’ll see how that goes. I’ve started this exercise DVD and it’s pretty good… I just have to be consistent with it …which is tough.

Month 4 of my weight loss has come to a close and my stupid, piece of crap body isn’t doing what I WANT IT TO. My total weight loss for this month is 2lbs… TWO POUNDS!! That is really not going to cut it. I need to do better.

July: 2lbs (ughhhh)

September: 5lbs (consistent is good)

October: 5lbs (more of the same)

It’s pretty obvious now that I can’t just rely on the increased walking to help me loose weight. My body has gotten used to it, and therefore, I need to add more exercise if I want to keep loosing more weight. If I can get back up to 5lbs a month, then I’ll have lost 30lbs by the time my friends’ wedding takes place. My goal was 45lbs… but I’ll settle for 30 …NO LESS!!

You hear me body!? NO LESS.

For the record, it feels great. Like I’ve accomplished something. Like I’m transforming into the person I always knew I was inside, but didn’t quite look on the outside. The only downside is that most of my current clothes are starting to get a little roomy. I hesitate to go shopping for new stuff because of what might happen a few months from now… when even THAT won’t fit. Still, that’s a problem I’d like to have.

Month 3 of my weight loss (and subsequent tracking) has come to a close and sadly, I’m not happy. DAMN YOU body, what’s your problem!? I was shooting for a loss of 10lbs, but only made it to 5. Let’s take a look at the scoreboard…

April: 5lbs (DONE!)

May: 5lbs (DONE!)

June: 5lbs (…was hoping for 10)

July: 10lbs (Based on June, this is going to be difficult)

August: 10lbs (Maybe I’ll be on a roll by this time?)

September: 5lbs (…a short roll)

October: 5lbs (this will be tough as I get closer to normal weight and size)

My overall goal is to lose 45lbs by the end of October. I’ve lost 15lbs total so I’m doing okay, but I definitely have to change things if I want to reach my goal. Part of that will be to try and exercise more (walking is great, but I could be doing more).

Eating healthier is also something I should look into. I don’t eat that badly, but I’m sure I could cut out certain things in my diet that would help. I’m looking at you pizza… sweet delicious pizza.

…this is going to be tough
